Answer Options provides several check boxes that allow you to alter various aspects of the answer choice you are adding or modifying. The following is a summary of each option, how it affects the answer, and what additional fields you may encounter when the option is selected.

Selected by Default

When checked for a specific answer choice, this option will cause that answer choice to be selected by default when a new user loads the survey. You may only select this option for one of your radio button answer choices. The radio button question type allows for the user to only select one possible answer, and therefore, only one of the answers can be selected by default.

Not Selectable

With this option you can make any of the answer choice option NOT selectable. For instance, you may want to make your first select box option say something like "Select one of the options below", but not as a selectable option.

Add Text Field

By default, radio buttons simply allow the user to select one of several pre-determined answers. However, you may wish to allow the user to enter their own option or accompany an answer with additional text. In this case, simply check this option and a text field will accompany your radio button option. One special characteristic about this option is that if it is checked, you can actually create an answer that contains no Answer Text. This allows you to create a situation where the user enters their own answer with no other answer text surrounding the text field.

When you opt to Add a Text Field to your answer, the answer editor will also display the following fields: Text Field Not Selected, Text Field Required, Text Field Length, and Text Field Invalid. These additional fields allow you to control the behavior of the text field for this specific answer. The answer option Customize Error Messages for this Answer will also appear, since the only error message that can be configured on a per-answer basis for radio buttons is one relating to text field validation.

Customize Template for this Answer

When creating a template, designers can specify fields that pertain to radio button answer choices. If you check this option, additional fields will appear allowing you to customize various aspects of this answer choice in the template you have chosen. Some of the more common customizations are items such as answer text style and answer text field style. The template designer, however, can include any fields they wish (and hopefully provide relevant help — click on the question mark icon next to each field to read more about it).

Customize Error Messages for this Answer

This option will only appear if you have also opted to Add Text Field for this answer choice. This is because currently the only error message that can be configured on a per-answer basis for radio buttons. These fields allow you to customize the error messages that would appear if the user has selected this specific answer with a problem.

Fixed Position

This option will only appear if you have Randomize Answer Choices or Alphabetize Answer Choices enabled for the field Answer Order. When selected, this option prevents this particular answer choice from being randomized or alphabetized, leaving the answer choice in place.
